The MaltMUN Society is an independent, internationally-minded organization committed to securing close ties among the most diverse of its members, investing in their personal development and nurturing leadership skills, whilst embracing the spirit of the United Nations throughout.
The Society was founded following a successful international showing by a number of Maltese participants in the London International Model United Nations, held in February of 2013. The Society’s aims are not only to offer a platform for other like minded youths and individuals to participate in similar simulations worldwide, but also to help nurture the relevant skills required to make individuals prominent and inspirational persons in their everday lives. The MaltMUN Society wishes to look beyond simple participation and focus on holistic personal development – helping to deliver the skills that would aid youths become influential leaders in terms of their respective career paths.
Having just established itself as an official NGO, the Malta Model United Nations Society held its first event entitled “Speak Up”on the 31st August at the University of Malta. The event was intended to serve as a launch pad for the young organisation to promote its goals to youths at a University level. The workshop was mainly focused on speech writing and public speaking skills and their relevance to everyday life. As stated by Society President Christopher Bergedahl in his introductory statement, the organisation is a firm believer in learning by doing. For this reason, the sessions involved intense practical exercises to supplement the presentation content. Points delivered during the sessions were then applied in a relevant context to allow the participants to develop their delivery skills and confidence.
The session was closed by a round up of the various international opportunities to be offered through the MaltMUN Society over the coming months. With the Society aiming to become a major stakeholder and player in regional MUNs it has identified a number of simulations which it has expressed interest in sending delegations. Delegations formed through the MaltMUN Society are offered training and developmental programmes, similar to Speak Up prior to the simulation in order to ensure high quality performances.
